Chapter Six

I could feel Devin's fangs against my neck. They scraped against my skin and his grip on my jaw tightened. Did he believe me? Was he going to let me live? I had no clue and all I could do was scream.

“Did you hear me?! I'm your daughter!” That time, since I probably raised the dead with my last attempt to live, he let me move just a little.

I turned my head and our faces were only an inch apart. The scent of blood from his mouth was overpowering, but thank God it wasn't mine.

“What did you say?” Yeah, I nearly screamed it into his face, so he knew damn well what I said.

There I stood, on Devin's front porch, in a near death grip of a vampire's hold. “You and my mom had a thing after you got married,” I whispered, “and the neck you're about to rip open, belongs to the result of that relationship.” Devin still didn't move and I could feel his chest against my back, my head still held to the side as he contemplated my words. His next move caught me off guard even more than what he had already done.

I didn't realize that he had turned me around to face him until I slammed against his chest. In a move that I barely saw, he had my wrist against his mouth. I remember looking at my hand just a fraction of a second before he raked his fangs against my skin.

His nasty tongue covered the tiny scrapes and I was horrified to see him smile as if he had just finished a large meal and polished off a fabulous dessert. I know, it was gross.

“How did I not know this already?” He was talking more to himself than to me, but I shrugged anyway and tried to get my arm out of his grasp. It didn't budge.

I watched in absolute horror as his eyes closed again. It looked like he was literally processing and analyzing my DNA is his fucking mouth. I wanted to run but he held me almost perfectly still. No matter how much I struggled, I wasn't going to get free unless he let me go on his own.

That feeling, of absolute helplessness, had plagued me since I'd heard the truth about the Wilshires. The fact that I would always have to run, or be at their mercy, had brought out an anger that I'd never felt in my life. I was held against my will, my blood was lapped up without my consent, and Devin stood there and took his time with his new truth because he knew he could. He knew that I could do nothing to stop him. I'd had enough, and my reason for going to that damned house to begin with had changed dramatically.

All I wanted was to tell him the truth so that the vampires didn't have to chase me. I assumed that if they knew that it was my secret too, then there would be no reason to kill me.
